Sally Walsh | Sillier Than Sally
I am a Sydney (AUS) born & based professional mixed media & watercolorist artist, illustrator and designer. I am an overseas adventure addict, a champion of bright colours, shenanigan starter & a collector of all things vintage….with slight hoarding/magpie tendencies.
What rocks my boat?
Bear hugs, laughing till my sides about burst, dancing like there is no tomorrow, spending quality one on one time with animals, a bloody good storm, being in “my flow” and painting in my studio into the wee hours of the morning, my beautiful 2 year old son (who has sneakily and completely stolen my heart), my lovely and over logical hubby, & of course – a fine wine. Ha! Who am I kidding…it does not have to be fine!
“My “Scenic Route” life path so far, has included – a heck of a lot of art, a bit of Disney magic, some Rock ’n’ Roll & a touch of Olympic fever….”
Then there was light…
My earliest illustrating recollections are of creating rainbow & sun filled love notes for my parents, filling my primary school projects to the brim with colourful drawings (and not much in the way of “info”), art journalling with fancy paper and derwent pencils before “Art Journalling” existed….since then, I have of course, grown up – I am now obsessed with prisma coloured pencils rather than derwents =)
In 2011 my creative art & design biz “Sillier Than Sally” was born
Now my days are happily filled with creating art & working with some fabulous clients on projects of all shapes and sizes…
- Numerous group art exhibitions in Sydney, Melbourne, & USA.
- Commission art: figurative mixed media canvas art, portraits, pet portraits and wildlife art. Works hang in private collections in Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada & Ireland
- Create new brand identities to give small business “the right amount of pizazz & pop!”
- Design bright, fun and funky advertising campaigns
- Teach creative and fun adult “Art Workshops” at my tree tops Sydney art studio.
- Compete in “live art battles” (yep, call me crazy)
- Create “Live Art” at weddings, functions & other major events
- Teach “Mixed Media Art Days” in schools, for school students groups
- Create fun and lively commissioned murals – which are dotted across Sydney’s pubs, restaurants, offices, & bedroom walls.
- Create boutique wedding stationary sets, that give that perfect final touch to a brides big day.
Pre “Sillier Than Sally” shenanigans
I worked in the animation industry for Disney, on feature films – Lilo and Stitch 2, Bambi 2, Brother Bear 2, & Cinderella 3. As a graphic artist and story-boarder in the advertising industry across brands like Volvo, Mobile 3, Drambuie, Hayman Islands, Nikon & Stockland Retail. Created floral arrangements to die for in the florist world….and designed, made & brought to market my own accessories range. I also worked in the hospitality industry for a heck of a long time – working backstage at all the big rock ’n’ roll events that came through Sydney, like Kylie Minogue, Green Day, Robbie Williams, Blink 182, Australian ARIA Awards & Big Day Out Festivals. This also allowed me to travel the world over plenty of times – having the time of my life, working as a hospitality manager at the Olympic Games – London 2012, Beijing 2008, Torino 2006, Utah 2002 & Sydney 2000.
“Travelling enriches the soul, broadens your horizons, and invigorates your senses….well it does for me anyway!”
Being bitten by the travel bug as a child (due to many overseas family trips), travel has always been a BIG part of my life. I would spend my last penny on a plane ticket in a flash – Absorbing the sites & sounds of a foreign land, is an intoxicatingly rich & rewarding experience. It is also a huge source of inspiration for me & my art – I have art journal my way along some of these travels, you can see some journal snippets HERE & also some pretty darn fantastic travel photos HERE.
